The foundations for the new Ashburton Junction Signal Box were dug today by contractors and filled with concrete ready for the next stage – the brick base. Earlier plans to build much of the foundations in brick were changed when large amounts of ground water became apparent. Volunteer teams have been busy over the preceding months dealing with the drainage through the site and making a start on preparing the foundations. With train services about to commence for the season it was decided to employ contractors to deal with the ‘trench filled’ foundations in double quick time. This has been done and the progress can be seen in the accompanying pictures. In with the briccies next!
